About the British Library
The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and one of the world’s leading centres for research, culture and knowledge.
Its collections preserve and share the intellectual heritage of the UK and beyond, supporting researchers, businesses, students and the public. Millions of people engage with the Library each year through its reading rooms, exhibitions, learning programmes and digital services.
Based at its iconic site at St Pancras in London and with a major site at Boston Spa in Yorkshire, the Library plays a unique role in connecting people with knowledge, creativity and discovery. Its mission is to make knowledge accessible to everyone for research, inspiration and enjoyment.
Transforming the Library at St Pancras
The British Library is embarking on one of the most significant developments in its history: the transformation of its St Pancras site.
This ambitious programme will reimagine the Library as a 21st century national library and global hub for culture, research and innovation. Through a major extension and investment in new facilities and programmes, the development will create new spaces designed to inspire visitors, researchers and learners of all ages.
The programme will deliver:
- new library spaces for culture, learning and research
• expanded exhibition galleries and event spaces
• improved study and research environments
• a new learning centre
• enhanced public areas that open the Library more fully to the surrounding city
Alongside these new library facilities, the project will strengthen the Library’s role within London’s Knowledge Quarter, creating new opportunities for collaboration with universities, businesses and cultural organisations.
This is a once in a generation opportunity to reshape how the British Library serves the UK and the world.
Leadership for the Next Chapter
To deliver this ambitious programme, the British Library is appointing a Capital Programme Director to lead the development and delivery of the St Pancras transformation.
This role will oversee one of the most significant cultural capital projects in the UK, ensuring the programme is delivered successfully while maintaining the Library’s operational excellence and public mission.
Alongside this role, the Library is also appointing a new Operations Director, who will ensure the organisation continues to operate effectively throughout the transformation. Together, these two senior leaders will help shape the next chapter of the British Library.
